ACT Seeks Top Teachers for Summer Program

October 2, 2003

IOWA CITY, Iowa—ACT is looking for secondary school teachers to participate in a summer program designed to help develop and evaluate ACT’s test materials and classroom support materials.

ACT’s Visiting Teacher Program seeks four teachers from middle school, junior high or high school with experience teaching students of color. The Visiting Teacher Program is in its ninth year of bringing teachers from across the United States to ACT’s national headquarters in Iowa City, Iowa.

During their six-week stay, teachers will use their classroom experience and expertise in one of two ways:

Secondary school science, mathematics and language arts teachers are eligible for the program. Earth/space science teachers and teachers of color are especially encouraged to apply.

The six-week program begins June 21 and runs through July 30, 2004. Teachers will be paid a stipend of $5,500 and round-trip transportation between their home and Iowa City. ACT will subsidize housing for the visiting teachers.

“As educators, we are always looking for ways to evaluate the job we are doing,” said Gary Willis, a teacher from Paducah, Ky., who served as one of the four visiting teachers in summer 2003. “Working with ACT has provided me with the tools to do this more effectively. I can take back strategies and suggestions to my district about how to assess students better and record that assessment more accurately.”

To apply, teachers need to submit a completed application (PDF; 1 page, 63KB). Teachers will also need to send a current resume and two letters of recommendation. Send application materials to:
