According to a 2008 report by the college-testing organization ACT, “The Forgotten Middle: Ensuring That All Students Are on Target for College and Career Readiness Before High School,” college readiness is “acquisition of the knowledge and skills a student needs to enroll and succeed in credit-bearing, first-year courses at a post-secondary institution. … “Eighth grade students who are not on target for college- and career-readiness face severe academic obstacles in high school and are substantially more likely to be unprepared for college and career when they graduate than students who are on target to become ready for college and career in the eighth grade,” Edwards said. From that, Edwards said, the BISD’s policy should focus on monitoring student progress and intervene with students who are not on track, as well as explain to parents and kids the benefits of taking challenging course work and using multiple sources of information to help students and parents keep track of the students’ progress.
