Geneticist
PrintWork Tasks
GENETICISTS set up and carry out experiments and investigations, and collect data and analyze it, to determine biological, environmental, and other factors that influence the origin and development of inherited traits such as color and size. They modify the genetic material, which controls inherited characteristics, by using specialized procedures. Geneticists reintroduce this modified or genetically engineered DNA back into the cells and chromosomes of living organisms. These procedures help identify and possibly treat genetic diseases; develop techniques to identify people; and benefit and increase production of crops and animals.
Salary, Size & Growth
- $71,500 average per year ($34.50 per hour)
- A medium occupation (93,600 workers in 2010)
- Expected to grow rapidly (4.0% per year)
Entry Requirements
For GENETICISTS, a Ph.D. is usually required for college teaching, independent research, and advancement to administrative positions. A master's degree is sufficient for jobs in applied research. A bachelor's degree is adequate for non-research jobs. A Ph.D. is the minimum education required for prospective medical scientists. It is helpful for medical scientists to earn both Ph.D. and medical degrees. Medical scientists are generally expected to spend several years in a post-doctoral position before they are offered permanent jobs. The American Board of Medical Genetics certifies laboratory and clinical geneticists. The American Board of Genetic Counseling certifies genetic counselors.
