MOTION PICTURE PROJECTIONISTS set up, operate, and adjust projection and sound-reproducing equipment to produce coordinated effects on screen. For feature-length movies they run two projectors, audio equipment, a rewinding machine, and seven or more reels of film. Motion picture projectionists regulate and adjust projection light and focus, volume, tone, and timing of projection equipment. Motion picture projectionists must also be able to maintain and make minor repairs on the equipment, such as replacing worn sprockets that could damage the film.

Entry Requirements
MOTION PICTURE PROJECTIONISTS learn their skills through an apprenticeship that lasts from one to two years. Union rules usually specify that applicants be at least eighteen years old and have a high school diploma. A few cities and states require projectionists to be licensed. Union membership in the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees and Motion Picture Machine Operators of the U.S. and Canada is required for employment in some areas.
