GENETIC COUNSELORS assess individuals and families who are at risk for genetic disorders and birth defects. They work as members of a health care team, providing supportive counseling to families. Genetic counselors serve as patient advocates, and refer individuals and families to community or state support services. They analyze inheritance patterns and risks of recurrence, and review available options with the family. They may do research related to the field of medical genetics and genetic counseling.

Entry Requirements
GENETIC COUNSELORS with experience, further education and training, and leadership skills may advance to higher positions, such as director of genetic counseling services in a university or hospital setting. Some may move into positions in research and diagnostic laboratories.
