NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTERS test products and materials for quality without affecting their shape, fit, or function. They determine the structure, composition, physical, and material properties of the products. Testers may measure flatness or straightness. They use various testing methods, including radiographic, ultrasonic, magnetic particle, acoustic, leakage, and visual examination. They read test orders to decide the type of test, and then prepare items by applying cleansers, developers, and other agents, or drying items in ovens. They operate test equipment and interpret and evaluate test results. They may recommend design changes, based on the test results.

Entry Requirements

Most employers prefer applicants for NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTER jobs in nondestructive testing shops with at least a high school diploma and classes in the physical sciences and mathematics. College courses in physics and engineering are also helpful. Some colleges offer certificates or associate's degrees in nondestructive testing. Those who specialize in underwater testing must be certified divers.
