In this program, you will learn theories and principles of correctional science and how to function as a professional corrections officer working in a public or private incarceration facility. You will study causes and dimensions of crime and delinquency, and characteristics and behavior of criminals. You will also study the American criminal justice system, including the operation of criminal courts, and the theories and procedure of law enforcement. This may prepare you for security services, probation, corrections, parole, and rehabilitation.
Degrees
- A certificate or associate degree may prepare for work in law enforcement or the prison system.
- A bachelor's degree, combined with work experience, is usually required for management positions.
- A graduate degree is required for teaching, research, and some management positions.
