ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANTS/EXECUTIVE SECRETARIES perform many administrative and clerical duties needed to keep a firm running smoothly. They create spreadsheets, manage databases, and create reports and documents, using desktop publishing. They schedule meetings and appointments and organize and keep paper and electronic files. They manage projects, do research, and give information by phone, postal mail, and email. They prepare correspondence and make travel arrangements. They use office equipment, such as computers, fax machines, copiers, and phone systems to help them in their work.

High school graduates with office skills may qualify for entry-level secretarial positions. However, more employers require knowledge of software applications, such as word processing.
