MEDICAL RECORD ADMINISTRATORS design, develop, and manage health information systems used to document, store, and retrieve medical records. They direct the activities of medical record departments in hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare facilities in order to meet standards of accrediting and regulatory agencies. Administrators supervise medical record technicians, clerks, and transcriptionists who collect healthcare data by abstracting and encoding information, and by using computer programs to interpret data. Administrators safeguard and maintain confidentiality of patient information.

Entry Requirements
A bachelor's degree with a major in medical record administration is the minimum educational requirement for MEDICAL RECORD ADMINISTRATORS. To qualify for certification as a professional Registered Record Administrator (RRA), a candidate must successfully complete a medical records administration educational program approved by the American Medical Record Association (AMRA) and pass a national registration examination.
