Work Tasks

PLASTERERS apply plaster to interior walls and ceilings to form fire-resistant and soundproof surfaces. They also apply plaster veneer over drywall to create smooth or textured abrasion-resistant finishes. Plasterers apply durable plasters, such as polymer-based acrylic finishes and stucco, to exterior surfaces, and may install prefabricated exterior insulation systems over existing walls for good insulation and interesting architectural effects. In addition, plasterers may cast ornamental designs in plaster.

Entry Requirements

Although most employers recommend apprenticeship as the best way for PLASTERERS to learn the trade, many people learn the trade by working as helpers to experienced plasterers. Apprenticeship programs generally consist of two to three years of on-the-job training, in addition to at least 144 hours annually of classroom instruction in drafting, blueprint reading, and mathematics for layout work. Applicants for apprenticeships or helper jobs must be at least seventeen years old. Employers prefer applicants with a high school diploma. No special licensing or certification is required for plasterers.
