WEIGHT REDUCTION SPECIALISTS use their knowledge of diets, food, and nutrition to help counsel clients wishing to lose weight. They help prevent illness and maintain good health by promoting healthy eating habits. Weight reduction specialists evaluate a client's diet and suggest modifications. Weight reduction specialists work with clients to set goals and decide how much weight they should lose each week. They plan menus and talk about ways to deal with social events that involve food. Weight reduction specialists may weigh and measure clients or take pictures to show their progress. They usually recommend exercise as part of the weight loss program.

Entry Requirements
Some WEIGHT REDUCTION SPECIALISTS in hospitals, diet centers, public health care agencies, or in private practice have a college degree with a major in dietetics, nutrition, or food systems management. The majority of weight reduction specialists affiliated with healthcare facilities, hospitals, or outpatient clinics are registered dietitians. To become registered, a dietitian must have a bachelor's degree, complete a clinical internship, and pass a national examination. Weight reduction specialists may also need to meet local or state licensure laws to practice in the community.
