HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE WORKERS are responsible for the regular upkeep of highways and roads, making sure they are in safe condition and repair. They work for public works departments in all levels of government. Highway maintenance workers usually work in crews. They perform manual tasks associated with road upkeep, such as filling potholes, repairing guardrails, and plowing snow. They clear ditches, repair road shoulders, and cut grass. Maintenance workers may occasionally operate steamrollers and emergency service vehicles.

Entry Requirements

Most employers prefer to hire HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE WORKERS who have at least an eighth grade education. Employers prefer workers who have had some experience in maintenance or construction. Experienced workers usually train new workers on the job. A driver's license and a good driving record is required.
