Topics of Study

In this program, you will learn how to teach physical education programs and/or to coach sports at various educational levels. The program begins with courses specific to the subject matter. Upper level courses focus on lesson planning, instructional techniques, assessment and evaluation techniques, and supervision and discipline strategies. You will observe an experienced teacher work with students, who will also supervise your lesson plans. You will then teach those lessons to the students. The supervising teacher provides ongoing advice and support.

Degrees

• A bachelor's degree, plus additional training in the particular subject, is required to teach at the elementary or secondary education level.
• A graduate degree may be necessary to teach in higher education, or to be a career or guidance counselor.
