This program focuses on the German language and related dialects as used in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, neighboring European countries containing German-speaking minorities, and elsewhere. It includes instruction in German philology; Old, Middle, High German and Plattdeutsch, and other regional dialects. You will learn to speak, listen to, read, and write a language. You will learn the grammar, syntax, punctuation, and pronunciation. Also you will learn about the culture, history, and literature of the country whose language you are studying.
Degrees
- A certificate program might prepare individuals for occupations, such as customs official or travel agent, or to work in a German-speaking country
- A bachelor's degree is usually required to enter occupations such as teacher, translator, researcher, or interpreter.
- A graduate degree may qualify for jobs, such as professor, scientific linguist, or work fields, such as international law, diplomacy, business, or medicine.
