This is a program that prepares individuals to provide evaluations, referrals, and short-term counseling services to help people prevent or remediate personal problems, conflicts, and emotional crises. You will study human development, psychopathology, individual and group counseling, and personality theory. You will also learn career assessment, patient screening and referral, observation and testing techniques, interviewing skills, and professional standards and applicable laws and regulations.
Degrees
- A certificate or associate degree program prepares individuals to assist in a clinical setting as a mental health counselor.
- A bachelor's degree will qualify you for positions in management and teaching. Clinical certification by one or more national counseling organizations may also be required.
