Bricklayer/Stonemason
PrintWork Tasks
BRICKLAYERS/STONEMASONS create attractive, durable surfaces and structures. Bricklayers build and repair walls, floors, partitions, fireplaces, chimneys, and other structures with brick, pre-cast masonry panels, concrete block, and other materials. Stonemasons build stone walls and set stone exteriors and floors. They work with natural cut stone, such as marble, granite, and limestone, and artificial stone, such as marble chips. Most nonresidential buildings are now built with walls made of concrete block, brick veneer, stone, granite, marble, tile, or glass. Bricklayers/stonemasons must be versatile and work with many materials.

Entry Requirements
Most BRICKLAYERS/STONEMASONS pick up their skills informally on the job from experienced workers. Many get training in vocational education schools, or from industry-based programs. However, the best way to learn these skills is through an apprenticeship program, which lasts about three years. Applicants for apprenticeships must be at least 17 years old. A high school education is preferred, and courses in mathematics, mechanical drawing, and shop are helpful. No special licensing or certification is required for bricklayers/stonemasons. However, certification of skills is available from the Associated General Contractors of America.
