SOCIAL SERVICE DIRECTORS are responsible for the overall operation of social service departments that provide services to people with various problems and needs. They may work in hospitals, where services are focused on psychosocial aspects of medical problems. Some may work in county or state agencies providing foster care and adoption services for children. Others may work in community family service agencies that provide counseling services to families with marital or other problems. They monitor programs to ensure their efficiency and effectiveness. They identify new aspects of services and plan long range programs to meet future needs of people.

Entry Requirements
Licensing and certification for SOCIAL SERVICE DIRECTORS vary by state. Social service directors need at least a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree. Schools offer MSW programs and Ph.D. or Doctor of Social Work (DSW) programs.
