LIBRARY ASSISTANTS keep library resources in an orderly condition and make them readily available to users. They work under the direction of librarians, and library technicians. Library assistants lend and collect books, periodicals, videotapes, and other materials. They inspect returned items for damage, check due dates, and compute any fines that may be owed. Assistants answer patrons' questions, sort returned books, publications, and other items and return them to their designated shelves. Assistants also repair damaged materials.

Entry Requirements
Most employers require applicants for LIBRARY ASSISTANT positions to have at least a high school diploma or its equivalent. A higher level of education will usually be favored over a high school diploma, but it is not generally required. Most employers prefer to hire persons with computer knowledge. No special licensing or certification is required for library assistants.
