This broad major will orient you to English language and literature. You will learn structure and history of English language, and forms of literature, such as essay and poetry. You will study effects on beliefs and emotions of its readers, and on literature and culture of English-speaking people. You will study literature to understand point of view, tone, metaphoric terms and irony, and image; and writing to develop and use style and techniques you have learned from study of literature. You will be constantly involved in reading, research, and writing.
Degrees
- A bachelor's degree is usually required to get a job as a writer or a secondary teacher.
- A graduate degree is preferred for most jobs in this field, such as journalism, publishing, business, government, entertainment, or other fields which require excellent writing ability.
- An advanced degree is generally needed to teach in a university setting.
