This broad major is intended to orient you to the study of music as a whole. You will focus on the appreciation of music and other performing arts media. You may learn about the historical evolution of music and the development of musical instruments. You may also learn to play a musical instrument, compose your own works, and to critique performances of others. You will gain a greater appreciation of how music functions as an important part of society.
Degrees
- Certificate programs focus on improving skills in one type of music.
- Associate and bachelor's degree programs include useful background courses in other subjects and experience with a variety of music.
- A bachelor's degree is helpful when applying for jobs with music-related organizations like small ensembles and orchestras, or as a teacher, composer, or music critic, librarian, or instrument manufacturer.
- A graduate degree is usually required for college teaching, music therapy, or research.
