This program prepares individuals, under the supervision of physicians and surgical nurses, to maintain, monitor, and enforce the sterile field in surgery. You will learn to adhere to aseptic technique by preoperative, surgical team, and postoperative personnel. This includes instruction in instrument and equipment sterilization and handling, surgical supplies management, wound exposure and closure, surgical computer and robot operation and monitoring, maintenance of hemostasis, and patient and team scrubbing.
Degrees
- A certificate or associate degree program qualifies you to work in entry-level positions within the surgical technology field.
- Graduates from two- and four-year programs in surgical technology may take the examinations. Most employers require applicants for entry-level or general positions to be certified.
- Exams are offered by The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) for voluntary certification and registration to graduates of accredited programs.
