In this program, you will learn about crime as an aspect of society. You will study the psychological and social forces which cause people to commit criminal acts. You will also study the criminal justice system in the United States and its treatment of criminals. You will study sociology, in order to better understand the influence of culture and society upon behavior. You will also study psychology, criminal law, social value systems and the theory of punishment, and social attitudes and policy.
Degrees
- A certificate or associate degree may prepare individuals for work in a police department or sheriff's office.
- A bachelor's degree is required to enter occupations related to this major in law enforcement or social service agencies.
- A graduate degree is usually required for teaching and research positions, and for work in the areas of law, child welfare, and psychology.
