Work Tasks

INTERNET/INTRANET PROGRAMMERS install, upgrade, and maintain the back-end of an Internet site. They apply their knowledge of relational databases, application servers, Internet programming languages, and Internet protocols to connect the company's database with web pages, making retrieval and transmission of information possible. Internet programmers participate in the development of web content, including scripting, database integration, and user interface design. Internet programmers write detailed instructions that list in logical order the steps the computer must follow to organize data, solve a problem, or do some other task. Internet/Intranet programmers test the system periodically, reconfigure and update it as necessary, and repair the system when it fails.

Entry Requirements

Employers usually require INTERNET/INTRANET PROGRAMMERS to have a bachelor's degree in computer science or information systems. Employers using computers for business applications prefer to hire those who have had college courses in management information systems (MIS), programming, and business. Even with a degree, employers often stress previous experience for job applicants. No special licensing or certification is required for Internet/Intranet programmers.
